Dentists’ Health Support Programme (DHSP)


Rory O’Connor

MSc Addictions, BA Psychology, Registered Psychiatric Nurse, Diploma in Counselling. Rory has worked for 39 years in mental health and addictions and has extensive experience in managing programmes for health professionals and veterinary surgeons with mental illness and addictive disorders. Currently he is the National Coordinator of the Dentists’ Health Support Programme and the Veterinary Surgeons’ Health Support Programme. Rory is a first responder for the Doctors’ helpline, Clinical Advisor for the Practitioner Health Programme (London) and has his own independent practice. He was formerly a Clinical Director within the NHS and in Charitable and Independent settings. He continues to be heavily involved in proposals for the UK development of specialised clinical services for clinical staff. | 07725972866

Kevin P Collins BDS(Edin)

Kevin graduated from Edinburgh University in 1970. After serving in The Royal Army Dental Corps he entered general practice in Scotland and then in Hampshire. He is a longstanding member of the British Doctors and Dentists Group and of International Doctors in Alcoholics Anonymous. He served on the Steering Committee of IDAA and is currently a member of the Long Range Planning Committee. He has been involved, since 1983, in establishing services to promote Dentists’ health and well being in relation to Addictive Disorder. His special expertise is informed by clinician addiction services development in North America. It is translated into pursuing the establishment of clinical services for dentists in the UK and providing individual support in recovery.

Dentists’ Health Support Trust (DHST)

The DHST was founded in 1991. The Trust is a registered charity.

The Trust is responsible for the management of the DHSP, and raising funds from within the profession to support and maintain services provided by the Coordinators of the DHSP.


John Cameron (Chairman)

John is Senior Dental adviser at NHS National Services Scotland (NSS), he has been a Trustee for over a decade and has considerable experience assisting health professionals particularly when in difficulty with the regulators. He spent many years running his own dental practices both in Scotland and England, in addition to his role at NSS he is also a Senior Clinical Teaching Fellow, running the law and ethics programme at the University of Aberdeen Dental School.

Michael Stern (Secretary/Treasurer)

After serving in the Royal Air Force attended The Royal Dental School and qualified in 1962. Opened a Dental Practice in Wood Green (Haringey) in 1966 and continued until retirement in 2002. Served on Enfield and Haringey Local Dental Committee from 1974 until retirement. From 1976 -1983 as Secretary and 1983-1996 as Chairman. Became a Regional Referee for DHST or Sick Dentists Scheme as it was then and became a Trustee in 1998. Now Honorary Treasurer and Hon Secretary.

Janine Brooks

After qualifying in the early 80’s, Janine spent her whole clinical career in Community Dentistry, the last 17 years as a Clinical Director.

In July 2002, Janine was appointed as Caldicott Guardian to the NHS Information Authority where she had overall responsibility for the national health databases. In 2005 Janine was appointed Associate Director (Dentistry) with responsibility for leading the dental development programme.

In June 2011, Janine was appointed as Associate Postgraduate Dental Dean in the Oxford and Wessex Deanery (now Health Education England) where she is responsible for working with dentists in difficulty and leading the CPD programme for all dental registrants.

In addition, she is an educational inspector for the GDC, a non-executive director of CDS CIC, social enterprise, senior lecturer for the University of Northampton Foundation Degree in dental nursing and a facilitator/assessor for the Institute of Healthcare Management. She is also lead clinical tutor for the Law and Ethics module for Bristol University BUOLD programme.

In addition she finds time to run her own coaching and training consultancy, Dentalia, providing coaching for leadership to dental professionals and a broad range of education and training topics to include reflective practice, ethical practice, leadership skills, professionalism, under performance and communication skills.

Janine received an MBE for services to dentistry in the New Years Honours List 2007, and was awarded a Fellowship of the Faculty of General Dental Practice by election in March 2010.

Paul Langmaid

Paul was educated in Howardian High School and Llandaff Technical College (now UWIC), and graduated BDS (Wales) from Cardiff Dental School in 1975.

Following 10 years in General Dental Practice in Cornwall he was appointed by the ODA as Senior/Chief Dental officer on the island of Anguilla in the British West Indies.

In 1993 he joined the Dental Division of the Welsh Office and in 1997 was appointed Chief Dental Officer for Wales. Paul retired from that post in December 2010.

Paul is still on the dental register and Specialist List for Dental Public Health. He is a trustee of the Dentists’ Health Support Trust and Chairman of the Wales Eye Health Examination Advisory Group. He was appointed CBE by HM the Queen in her birthday honours 2010, entered on the BDA Roll of Honour in November 2011 and made Honorary Fellow of Cardiff University in July 2013

Beth Liptrot

Beth Liptrot qualified at Bristol and gained postgraduate training and experience at UCH, London; Georgetown University, Washington DC and Nottingham Hospitals. During this time she gained her FDS RCS (Eng). After part-time hospital posts in the Wolverhampton Hospitals, Birmingham Childrens’ Hospital and Southampton General Hospital she moved into the Community Dental Service in Hampshire, then Worcestershire and finally Wiltshire where she became a Specialist in Paediatric Dental Care. She took the MCCD RCS exam and subsequently became an examiner for this and the Diploma in Special Care Dentistry.

Over the years she has been involved locally and nationally with the BDA, BSPD and the BDA CDS Group culminating in becoming National President of the Group in 2007, three years before her eventual retirement. She has been awarded Life Membership of the BDA.

Beth became a Trustee for the DHST in the mid nineties whilst working as a Senior Dental Officer in Swindon, Wiltshire. She knew of two dentists at the time who were struggling with work, family life and social relationships and it became apparent, heavy drinking and this sparked her interest in the Programme.

Brian Westbury

Brian Westbury is an experienced general dental practitioner who has worked in both the Health Service and Private sectors. He has served on most of the important National and local dental committees. He is currently a trustee of the Dentists’ Health Support Trust. He has worked for the last few years as a senior-dentolegal advisor at Dental Protection Ltd dealing with UK and international cases.

He is the Coordinator for DPL’s Risk Partnership Programme. He lectures to students, practitioners and Health Authorities (or indeed anyone who will listen) both in the UK and abroad on dento-legal and risk management subjects. He has a wide knowledge of the regulations both of the NHS and the GDC and especially for disciplinary procedures. He has for several years provided short courses for dentists coming into the UK for the first time.

Brian has degrees in dentistry, psychology, and law.

May L Hendry BDS, MFGDP(UK)

May Hendry Graduated from Glasgow University in 1982. After some postgraduate training within a hospital setting she became a General Dental Practitioner and has been a partner in a practice for the last twenty three years. May did part time student teaching in restorative dentistry for seventeen years, and was the Dental Practice Adviser for NHS Ayrshire and Arran for fifteen years. She has been a member of many Scottish national dental committees and was Joint Chairman of the group which developed the National Standards for Dental Services in Scotland.

Simon Lidster

Simon Lidster

Born Doncaster 16/4/1958. Secondary education at Batley Boys Grammar School. Attained BDS from Sheffield University September 1980. Worked as NHS GDP ever since. Joint owner of 2 dental practices in Sheffield. One has 4 chairs dedicated to Outreach, allowing undergraduates to gain experience in general practice. Heavily committed to education and training of young colleagues. Foundation Trainer since 2004. Outreach Clinical Supervisor since 2004. Special interest in Endodontics, running hands-on courses for FDs and GDPs and taking private referrals. Been sober since August 1993. Special Referee for DHSP for many years. Past Convenor BDDG convention. Past member-at-large IDAA steering committee

Keen interest in fly fishing, aquatic entomology etc. Teach fly tying. Make my own fly rods. Board Member of Waltonians Angling Club.

Sonia Kumar

Sonia graduated from the University of Aberdeen and St Georges University of London with degrees in Bachelor of Dental Surgery and BSc(Hons) Biomedical Science in 2014.

She became a Trustee for the Dentists' Health Support Trust in January 2016. She joined the trust as she feels all dentists should have safe place where they can seek advice or support in confidence.
